Prepare your messages on becoming a disciple of Jesus and what it means to be a lifelong follower of God's Word with sermon outlines or an entire sermon series. These words of the Lord Jesus provide quite a contrast to what Jesus has previously said.

If you will look at the previous verses you will notice that Jesus tells the familiar parable of the Great Supper. The purpose of this parable of the Great Supper was to invite all who would to come and to be saved.

It is the parable that reminds us that whosoever will can come to the Lord Jesus Christ and they can receive salvation without price and without cost to them. Right after these words the Lord Jesus now gives these words where He says three times, ''You cannot be my disciple.

We begin tonight a brand new series on the miracles of Elisha. Elisha is one of the lesser known prophets in the bible but certainly but one of less importance. And there is a great, great benefit and blessing for us in studying the life and ministry of the man called Elisha because he is the prophet of abundant life. And abundant life is God's plan for me, and abundant life is God's plan for you.

And the Lord Jesus Christ said in John the tenth chapter and the tenth verse, ''I have come that you might have life and that you might have it abundantly.

Well, abundant life is life where all of your needs are being During His relatively brief public ministry, Jesus spent a disproportionate amount of time with a small group of disciples.

In His final hours, He clarified why He had done so and what He planned for them. His words must resonate with modern day disciples. The world in which they lived. The world that God loved. The world that ''hated'' God. The word they had received. The ''name'' had been revealed. The word they had obeyed. The claim they had believed.

The allegiance they had now embraced. They Were Intentionally ''Still in the This morning I want to speak to you about discipleship.

And I want to remind you that a disciple is someone who has a desire ''to know Him and to make Him known. Someone has said, ''As the soldier follows his general; as the servant follows his master; as the scholar follows his teacher; as the sheep follows its shepherd, just so ought the professing Christian to follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

There are two different kinds of gospel messages in this section. These are straightforward gospel sermon outlines that talk about what Christ has done for us. However, we recognise that in many cultures, a lot of people aren't interested in the gospel, so we have to be smart. We have to do what Paul said and "become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

The idea is to speak to where they live, give them practical help that they can use, and at the same time open their eyes to spiritual truths, and in particular, the gospel. These sermon outlines are topically based and work as stand-alone messages. They include messages such as Boldness and Winds of Change.

Topics are great, but exposition of Scripture can reap great dividends. The Scriptures cover so many different topics, even in a short book like James. News Items. Many call for practical sermons. I have made the same call on occasion. For example, some preachers use the term to mean sermons that give people life skills to help them live in this world.

These sermons would address such important things as becoming a better employee or entrepreneur. A few months ago, I remember a sermon that illustrates this mindset clearly. The preacher took the life or Joseph and distilled 4 or 5 principles that would help the hearer to become a better employee and thus get the next promotion. I forget the title, but the point was to follow the steps of Joseph to become a better employee. Certainly, if you apply the principles of this very practical sermon, you will no doubt be better equipped to move ahead in your job.

Certainly, there is a time to learn how to be a good worker or know when it is time to move to another job. But I seriously question whether the morning sermon during the worship service is the right time or location. On another note, I wonder if the preacher is the right one to give that kind of training in many instances.

Some would argue that we need to point people to the heavenly realm. This kind of preaching places a disconnect between the way we live during the week and the way we are called to live as Christians. This kind of preaching makes it too easy to be comfortable in political parties when both should offend our prophetic tendencies from time to time.

It makes it too easy to give grace and forgiveness to the perpetrators of wars based on lies while condemning the two-bit criminal robbing the Or vice-versa depending on our political tendencies. No, we are not looking for a practicality that does not confront the status-quo but merely teaches us how to strive to live in it. So what do we do? We preach what it means to live in that kingdom.

How to Preach Practical Sermons with Spiritual Depth

We preach the ethical demands on those of us who are citizens in that kingdom. We preach how to become citizens of that kingdom. We preach how to live as ambassadors of that coming kingdom in this world. It does mean that we will do our duty down here. So the practical side will be taken care of. But also, the spiritual side will be addressed, as this is the fuel that empowers our living. Great preaching is about living in that coming kingdom. Let us be true to it and true to our God.

There are different types of sermons, however, preaching must be intelligible to the audience. One of the best ways to make preaching understandable is to have the sermon itself organized; hence, the sermon outline. The sermon outlines contained herein are of the topical type for Christian and non-Christian.

There is a place for all types, the expository and inferential can certainly have advantages over the topical approach, depending on the circumstances and need. However, the topical lends itself to a broad assimilation and presentation of a given subject. Since the topical is not restricted to a given text, the topical can be abused and used to teach error with perhaps greater ease than some of the other sermon types.
